Will County Sheriffs Warn Of Scam Calls

Callers claiming to be Will County sergeants are scamming residents by asking for money and personal information, officials said.

WILL COUNTY, IL — The Will County Sheriff's Office is warning residents to be aware of imposter calls from someone who is posing as police and asking for personal information and for money

In one incident, a caller who is reported to have a "southern drawl," asked residents for personal information. He identified himself with the name of a real sergeant who is employed by Will County. The number that appeared on caller ID also is a sheriff's department phone number. However, officials said, the call is a scam.

In another call, someone who identified himself as "Detective Brown from the Will County Sheriff's Department" called a registered sex offender to tell him officials had a subpoena for his arrest and that the offender needed to meet the caller at a specific location to pay him "compliance money.

It is not a real call from Will County, the sheriff's office said. The office does not employ a "Detective Brown," the sex offender was in compliance, and the office does not call sex offenders to ask for compliance money.

Officials noted that the Will County Sheriff's Office does not ask for personal information over the phone, does not call to raise funds, and never calls to threaten or coerce people to pay them for warrants or other issues.
