Man Shot by Police Appears in Court

A Mundelein man charged with aggravated assault after pulling a replica handgun on Vernon Hills Police appeared in court Monday for a preliminary hearing.

A preliminary hearing was held Monday for the Mundelein man who was shot by Vernon Hills Police on April 3 when he entered the station to report a traffic accident then drew what appeared to be a gun on an officer.

Howard Lazarus, 53, is in the Lake County Jail unable to post 10 percent of a $100,000 bond. He is due back in court May 6 unless a grand jury indicts him on additional charges, reported the Daily Herald.

Lazarus, who is charged with felony aggravated assault, is believed to have been on a mission of suicide-by-cop.
