In just a couple of days, there will be a lot less hair in Vernon Hills.
The village’s St. Baldrick’s Day participants will have their heads shaved publicly at noon March 9 in front of The Gap in Hawthorn.
The good sports include Village President Roger Byrne, trustees Michael Marquardt and Thom Koch and Vernon Hills police officer Sharon Joseph. There are 21 registered participants in all.

Each “shavee” has set a personal fundraising goal, which goes toward the overall event’s goal of generating $10,000. The money will benefit the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, which supports childhood cancer research.
As of Thursday afternoon, donors had contributed $8,816. The lead fundraiser was Joseph, who had amassed $1,180 — just $10 more than Byrne.
