Vernon Hills Police to Host Pet Microchip Event

Residents are invited to have their pets microchipped on April 27 at the police department.

The Vernon Hills Police Department will hold a pet microchipping event from 9-11 a.m. April 27 at the police station. The event will be held in the garage (closest to Phillip Road), so weather will not matter.

Why microchip? It’s the best way to get your pet back if he is lost (or stolen).  Most shelters and veterinarians have scanners to check for a microchip, so an owner can be notified within hours of the pet being scanned. Collars and tags can be lost or removed, but a microchip lasts for the life of the pet.

The microchip is about the size of a grain of rice and is implanted under the pet’s skin, usually between the shoulder blades. This does not hurt the animal.

Interested pet owners can bring their cat or dog to the April 27 event. Cats must be in carriers and dogs must be leashed. If the dog might bite, a muzzle is a good idea.

The cost is $15 per pet (sorry, cash only). The pet will then be registered with the VHPD and the Lake County Animal Care and Control. For an additional fee, the pet owner can also register with the chip provider, Home Again, for additional services, such as 24-hour notification, travel assistance if your pet is found far from home, and Lost Pet Alerts sent out to shelters, veterinarians and concerned citizens who have signed up to be on the lookout for lost pets in the area where your pet was lost.
