55th Street Work Nearing Completion: State

It was originally supposed to get done a year ago. The state blamed a particular problem.

Construction on 55th Street in Western Springs and La Grange should be finished by around Thanksgiving, a state official said.

WESTERN SPRINGS, IL – The work on 55th Street between Wolf Road and Plainfield roads should be done around Thanksgiving, an official said late last week.

Next spring, the state Department of Transportation will have a little pavement and landscaping work related to the project, agency spokeswoman Maria Castaneda said in an interview.

The state originally expected the work to get done by last fall. At the time, the department blamed the delay on "unforeseen utility conflicts."

The $9.5 million project included resurfacing 1.6 miles of 55th Street, modernizing traffic signals, building new Americans With Disabilities Act-compliant sidewalk ramps, and extending the existing multi-use path on the north side of the street from Brainard Avenue to Wolf Road, according to the state.
