Baby Antelope Born While on Display at Brookfield Zoo (PHOTOS)

Brookfield Zoo visitors got to see one more animal than they expected June 7.

An addax antelope gave birth to a 19-pound male calf while in its exhibit, the zoo announced Thursday in a release.

Both mom Sara, 4, and the to-be-named baby are doing well.

The birth is part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Addax Species Survival Plan, which is helping to boost the endangered species’ population.

About 300 addax live in the Sahara desert, while 200 more live in captivity in North America, the zoo said.

More than 140 addax have been born at the Brookfield Zoo since 1941, including the first U.S. calf.

And more are on the way.

Three other addax—Martha, 13; Mali, 5; and Mona, 15—all have little antelope buns in the oven. The expectant moms are on display in their exhibit, which is on the 31st Street side of the zoo.
