WESTERN SPRINGS, IL – A new Mexican restaurant coming to town takes pride in its large menu, a representative told village officials this week.

Described as a fast casual restaurant, Taco Maya plans to open its 12th location in Western Springs. It is seeking a liquor license from the village. The goal is to open in February.

The restaurant is set for the Garden Market shopping center at 4700 Gilbert Ave., which includes Mariano's grocery store.

"It's family-friendly," Sonali Patel of Taco Maya told the Village Board. "It's a social spot where we want people to come in."

The chain offers a variety of tacos, tortas, burritos and enchiladas, as well as fusion items such as Nashville Hot Chicken tacos, she said.

"What makes us special and different is that we have a salsa bar for all of our clients that come in," Patel said. "We have seven different salsas."

She also has her favorite item – nachos on waffle fries, instead of chips.

The chain's other sites are in Chicago, Downers Grove, Schaumburg, Arlington Heights, Bloomingdale, Rosemont and Niles, according to its website.

"Each of our ambiances is a little different," Patel said. "With ambiance and food comes liquor, so we do have a drink menu that has margaritas, beers and other drinks."

Asked why Taco Maya chose Western Springs, she said it's because LA Tan is in the same shopping complex. She referred to LA Tan and Taco Maya as sister companies.

"I like being in the neighborhood with LA Tan," Patel said.

She said renovation of the space had just begun. Taco Maya got its building permit last week.

Village Trustee Karen Martin noted the closeness of Lyons Township High School's South Campus.

"In terms of snacking, you could be wildly successful," she said.

Patel said Taco Maya plans an affordable lunch special because of the nearby high school. She said the chain does the same for its location in Arlington Heights.
