The old bridge is being replaced with a longer and higher structure to accommodate the widening of I-294, the agency said.

Additionally, Cook County is conducting a study for improvements on Plainfield Road. The Illinois Tollway said the new bridge would be built to ensure compatibility with the county's plans.

The new bridge, the state agency said, will provide one lane of traffic and wide shoulders in each direction. To provide for pedestrian and bicycle access, a protected sidewalk is set to be included on the north side of the bridge.
