Western Springs Distracted Driving Sting Nets 25 Violators

The Western Springs Police Department targeted people during the week of April 21-28 who were using electronic devices while driving.

The Western Springs Police Department completed 25 traffic stops related to distracted driving during a special enforcement campaign the week of April 21-28.

Out of those stops, officers issued 10 warnings and 15 local ordinance citations to people who were using electronic devices while driving.

Distracted driving could result from checking email, eating or even changing the radioβ€”anything that takes a driver's attention from the road while behind the wheel. More than 3,300 people were killed in the U.S. during 2011 in crashes related to distracted driving, according to a police department press release.

Texting presents a particularly dangerous form of distraction.

"Texting is not only unlawful but most alarming as it combines three types of distractionβ€”visual, manual and cognitiveβ€”taking your eyes off the road, hands off the wheel and your mind off the task of driving," the department release said.
