Adams Park Honored With Level 1 Accreditation By Morton Arboretum

The park, which spans 2.5 acres near Main Street in downtown Wheaton, will be added to the arboretum's log of accredited parks.

WHEATON, IL — Adams Park in Wheaton was recently recognized with a Level 1 Arboretum Accreditation by Morton Arboretum and the internationally renowned ArbNet Accreditation Program.

“Earning this status for Adams Park helps the community recognize what a fantastic public resource we have,” Forestry Superintendent Jason Ackerlund said in a news release.

He added, “Our goal is to provide a diverse, informational and relaxing natural environment for everyone to enjoy. When you visit the park, you can see and learn about many more types of trees and plants than in your neighborhood.”

Spanning 2.5 acres near Main Street and Seminary Avenue in Wheaton. The park was donated to Wheaton in 1943 by Katherine Adams Wells, the news release said.

To earn Level 1 Arboretum Accreditation, a facility must have an arboretum plan, at least 25 species of trees and plants and a dedicated arboretum staff. As of Feb. 2023, Adams Park had more than 50 different species among its 138 trees.

City Manager Mike Dzugan commented, "Taking these extra steps to receive accreditation not only helps validate what we know is an outstanding park, but it provides educational opportunities for the community, as well. This process is another example of the City’s dedication to the environment and Wheaton’s urban forest."
