City Council Votes Unanimously Against Video Gaming Cafe On Butterfield

Petitioners had hoped to add video gaming to the gas station and car wash at 22WO7O Butterfield Rd.

WHEATON, IL — On Dec. 1, Wheaton City Council members voted unanimously in opposition to a proposal to add a video gaming establishment at 22WO7O Butterfield Rd. The area falls just outside of the city's incorporated boundaries.

Petitioners sought a zoning variance, as the site is roughly 300 feet from Glen Ellyn KinderCare. County code requires video gaming establishments to be 1,000 feet or more away from daycares. An additional variance was requested to permit the proposed business to be fewer than 1,000 feet away from another video gaming establishment.

Per city documents, zoning board members from Wheaton and DuPage County both recommended against approving the petitioner's requests. Two residents spoke in opposition during the Dec. 1 city council meeting ahead of the unanimous vote, which was reached after little discussion by council members.
