'Connect Wheaton' Aims To Fight Crime With Security Camera Registry

WHEATON, IL — The City of Wheaton has launched a new program that allows residents to register their security camera locations to help police investigate crimes.

A news release about the "Connect Wheaton" program explained, "Being able to determine where there are security cameras – including video doorbells, home security systems and commercial surveillance cameras – significantly enhances the Wheaton Police Department’s response efforts."

If a crime or emergency takes place, the camera's location will be accessed, but authorities will not have access to the live feeds of any personal cameras.

“Residents and businesses are important partners in creating a safe community, and Connect Wheaton is another tool the Wheaton Police Department is implementing to serve our community more efficiently and effectively,” Wheaton Police Chief P.J. Youker said in a statement.

He added, "We encourage everyone in our community who has a camera to participate so we can leverage technology to create a safer city together.”
