WHEATON, IL — The owner of the Dairy Queen at 1289 Butterfield Rd. is seeking approval to add a drive-thru to the building. Currently, the store is a Dairy Queen "treat" store, which sells ice cream cones, sundaes and other items, but does not offer fast food items from the chain's brazier menu.

At the Sept. 9 planning and zoning meeting, owner Shreyakumari Patel said, "I just wanted to get a drive-thru window because I wanted to increase my business."

The project's builder was not in attendance at the meeting, prompting board members to continue the proposal's public hearing until sometime in early October.

During the meeting, traffic engineer Callie Castro said the project "would need room to stack three vehicles and that there would be sufficient space for that in the site plan we were given at the time of the analysis."

Board members raised concerns, though, about the width of the proposed drive-thru, along with the possibility of causing additional traffic onto Butterfield Road during peak sales times.

Board member Christopher Dabovich said that the site, which is also home to Rosati's gets "crowded," especially on Friday and Saturday nights. He suggested moving the drive-thru window further back.

Regarding traffic, Dabovich said, "I think we're looking at a dangerous situation. I don't have a problem with the drive-thru. I just have a problem with the flow and the parking lot."
