According to District 200 spokeswoman Erica Loiacono, the fire began in a science storeroom before students arrived. Wheaton Firefighters were on the scene before students arrived to classes, she said. According to a news release from the Wheaton Fire Department, the fire started about 7 a.m.

The school's sprinkler system did activate and stopped the fire, but water did make its way out to the school's hallway, Loiacono said. Classes in that area of the school will be moved for the day, she said.

All students were directed to the school’s field house during the incident, but classes will resume as normal, Loiacono said.

Fire activity was heavy around the school Thursday morning, as a house fire also erupted about five blocks from Wheaton North at 25W330 Armbrust.

Loiacono sent the following email to Wheaton North parents Thursday morning:

This morning, before school began, there was a small fire in a science store room. The fire was put out by our sprinkler system and the fire department is on site. When students arrived to school this morning they were directed to the field house until the fire department could secure the area.

The fire department has cleared the building for classes to resume. Classes located in the 800 and 900 wing have been relocated.

Thankfully, there were no student or staff injuries and no one was transported to the hospital.

We thank you for your patience as we wanted to make sure we had accurate information to communicate to our parents. We take the safety and security of our students very seriously. We will communicate more information as it becomes available throughout the day.

According to the release from the fire department, "At this time, the cause of both fires is undetermined, and they are both being investigated by the Wheaton Fire Department, Wheaton Police Department and the DuPage County Fire Investigation Taskforce. Damage estimates are unavailable at this time. The Wheaton Fire Department was assisted on the scenes by the Wheaton Police Department, DuPage County Sherriff and numerous area fire Departments."
