New Video Gaming Spot On Butterfield? Wheaton Council To Weigh In
The city council will discuss a conditional use permit and zoning variances for a proposed video gaming spot at Butterfield and Route 53.
WHEATON, IL — The Wheaton City Council will review a conditional use and zoning variance request that would allow a video gaming establishment to occupy a corner of Route 53 and Butterfield Road.
A zoning variance would be required because the proposed site is roughly 300 feet from Glen Ellyn KinderCare. County code requires video gaming establishments to be 1,000 feet or more away from daycares. Another variance would permit the proposed business to be fewer than 1,000 feet away from another video gaming establishment.
City documents show that representatives from DuPage County's District Four Zoning Board of Appeals feel "the request seeking a variation for the distance from a daycare use represents a nearly 100 percent reduction from the zoning requirement, and the proximity to other gaming establishments effectively circumvents the County's zoning requirement altogether."

The board of appeals is recommending the city council object to the zoning requests on the grounds that they are "excessive" and the project will be "injurious to the neighborhood."
The city council meeting will be held Dec. 1 at 7 p.m.
