WHEATON, IL — Drivers with multiple unpaid parking tickets may now be towed in Wheaton, under a new ordinance aimed to curb illegal parking downtown and in residential areas. City officials say parking spots downtown continue to be taken by drivers who violate parking regulations.

A car can be towed if its license plate is linked to five or more unpaid parking tickets. When a tow is set to take effect, the city will notify the license plate holder by mail and via a sticker affixed to the vehicle.

From the date of the notice, the owner of the vehicle has seven days to bring unpaid tickets up to date before their car is towed.

“The majority of residents, employees and visitors follow our parking rules, and if they receive a ticket, they pay it,” Wheaton Police Chief P.J. Youker shared in a statement. “For the small number of drivers who repeatedly park illegally and refuse to pay, this gives the city a necessary enforcement method and encourages compliance.”
