50 Runners From Wilmette, Kenilworth Complete 2023 Chicago Marathon

Two local runners finished in the top 500 of their gender and the top 30 of their age divisions.

NEW TRIER TOWNSHIP, IL — In an edition filled with broken records, the 45th running of the Chicago Marathon on Saturday featured more than 47,000 runners, including 50 competitors from Wilmette and Kenilworth. Race officials said it was the most runners to ever finish the 26.2-mile race.

Kelvin Kiptum, of Kenya, was the top male runner and fastest overall finisher, clocking the first sub-2:01 marathon in an officially sanctioned competition with a world record time of 2 hours and 35 seconds.

“I knew I was coming for a course record, but a world record — I am so happy,” said Kiptum, a two-time Olympic champion and the most successful marathon runner of all time, according to the Associated Press.

“A world record was not on my mind today," he said, "but I knew one day I would be a world record-holder.”

Sifan Hassan, of the Netherlands, set a new course record on the women's side with at time of 2:13:44.

In addition, Marcel Hug, of Switzerland, broke his own record set in last year's wheelchair race with a time of 1:22:37. Catherine Debrunner, also of Switzerland, set a new course record for women in the wheelchair division with a time of 1:38:44.

This year, 32 men and 16 women from Wilmette, as well as six men and six women from Kenilworth, finished the marathon, according to unofficial results.

Two local runners finished in the top 500 among their genders, with Adrienne Eynon of Kenilworth finishing 191st among women and 28th in her age division, and Daniel Lennington of Wilmette and Canada finishing 446th among men and 26th in his age division.

And a North Shore resident made history this year, as Allison Naval, of Evanston, became the one millionth person to ever complete a Chicago Marathon, clocking a 4:23.13 finish in her first-ever marathon.
