License plate readers track down scrap metal thief; Land Rover stolen from auto repair shop: New Trier Township Police Blotters

NEW TRIER TOWNSHIP, IL — The following information comes from the Glencoe, Kenilworth, Northfield, Wilmette and Winnetka police departments and court records as a record of police activity and incidents reported to the police. Criminal charges merely represent accusations by the state, and county prosecutors often choose to drop or reduce them. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Anyone arrested is innocent unless later proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
WILMETTE
INCIDENTS
STOLEN CAR
A Land Rover left at an auto repair shop in the 800 block of Green Bay Road on March 6 was stolen after its key fob was left on the front counter inside the business with the front door unlocked on March 16. By 9 a.m. the following morning, the key fob and the car were stolen.
FORGERY
Around 3:30 p.m. on March 18, staff at the Walgreens, 3232 Lake Ave., reported someone provided a forged prescription in an attempt to obtain Norco. The suspect left before officers arrived.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS
Gregory M. Cook, 58, of the 9100 block of Ewing Avenue, Evanston, was arrested shortly after 8 p.m. on March 21 after crashing a GMC into a fence post near the intersection of Wilmette and Prairie avenues. Officers reported he appeared to be impaired and declined to provide a breath sample. He was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless driving, criminal damage to property and possession of drug paraphernalia. Officers also issued him citations for improper lane usage, improper stopping on roadway, possession of drug paraphernalia and illegal transportation of alcohol.
Braulio Guzman-Vazquez, 50, of the 1800 block of West Erie Street, Chicago, was arrested and charged with burglary after he was spotted on surveillance footage breaking into a locked area of the Wayfair construction site at 3232 Lake Ave. and stealing about $500 worth of scrap metal. Police reported they spotted his white Ford F150 leaving the area using the village's automated license plate readers near the site. Authorities said Guzman later admitted to the burglary following his arrest on Chicago's West Side. At Guzman's initial court appearance, his court-appointed attorney said he collects scrap metal as his full-time occupation.

IDENTITY THEFT
A Robsart Road resident reported on March 22 that someone had used their identity to open a bank account and take out a fraudulent $9,500 loan from Upstart/Customers Bank on Feb. 6.

On March 24, a Mayfair Lane resident reported that an unidentified person had intercepted checks in the mail and tried to cash them without authorization.
WINNETKA
INCIDENTS
CAR BURGLARY
Between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on March 21, someone burglarized an unlocked Lexus in a parking lot in the 900 block of Pine Street, but nothing was reported stolen from within.
IDENTITY THEFTS
- A Birch Street resident reported on March 21 that someone had intercepted a check in the mail between Feb. 19 and March 9 and cashed it for a loss of more than $1,400.
- A Foxdale Avenue resident reported on March 24 that someone had used their identity in an abortive attempt to withdraw money from their checking account the day before.
ARRESTS/CITATIONS
Mario A. Flores-Roa, 35, of the 100 block of Dewey Avenue, Evanston, was arrested around 9:15 p.m. on March 21 in the 400 block of Green Bay Road and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. He was also cited for no taillights.
A 31-year-old Skokie man was arrested around 4:45 p.m. on March 25 and charged with driving with a suspended license and cited for illegal transportation of cannabis, defective windshield, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended registration and disobeying a stop sign.

INCIDENTS
CRIMINAL DAMAGE
A resident in the 600 block of North Happ Road reported around 1:30 p.m. on March 20 that someone had damaged their mailbox earlier that day.
CAR BURGLARY
Someone smashed the passenger side window of a car parked in the parking lot of the Happ Inn in the 300 block of South Happ Road and stole a purse from inside, causing an estimated loss of about $600 in cash and gift cards, police were told.
THEFT
A Park City resident reported on the afternoon of March 21 that they had lost their wallet at the Shell station at 1855 Willow Road the prior evening. They later were notified of a fraudulent charge in excess of $1,500 charged at a Chicago Nordstrom store to one of their cards.
IDENTITY THEFTS
- An Arbor Lane resident reported on March 23 that someone had recently used their identity to open an online account with their personal information. A fraudulent $18,000 out-of-state charge was credited back to the victim by the financial institution.
- A Sunset Ridge resident reported on March 23 that someone had recently made an unauthorized charge of more than $300 to one of their credit cards.
