WILMETTE, IL — Ahead of National Ice Cream Day, Wilmette-Kenilworth Patch last week asked readers for their recommendations for the best ice cream place in town.
The results are in, with one historic local creamery dominating its competition.
Homer's Ice Cream Parlor, 1237 Green Bay Road, was recommended by more than half of the dozens of respondents to the unscientific survey.

Readers praised the texture and taste of the hand-made, hand-packed "homemade gourmet" ice cream.

"Great ice cream, historic location and very friendly service," one reader said.
"The taste, quality and unique flavors," said another.
Rumored to be a favorite of famed gangster Al Capone, Homer's opened up shop in Wilmette in 1935. Founder Gus Poulos passed down the business to his two sons, who still use the traditional family recipe and craft their ice cream in house.
