Neighbor finds items stashed from earlier garage burglary; break-in at Green Bay Road eatery: New Trier Township Police Blotters

NEW TRIER TOWNSHIP, IL — The following information comes from the Glencoe, Kenilworth, Northfield, Wilmette and Winnetka police departments and court records as a record of police activity and incidents reported to the police. Criminal charges merely represent accusations by the state, and county prosecutors often choose to drop or reduce them. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Anyone arrested is innocent unless later proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.


GLENCOE

INCIDENTS

CRIMINAL DAMAGE
Someone drove their car off the road and onto the parkway grass on Sheridan Road near South Avenue prior to 1:30 a.m. on Sept. 30, causing an unknown amount of damage to public property. The driver was issued a citation for damage to village property.

CAR BURGLARY
Someone burglarized an unlocked Jeep while it was parked at Glencoe Beach, 38 Park Ave., between 2:30 and 3:15 p.m. on Sept. 30, stealing a wallet containing lottery tickets, credit, debit and identification cards and $120 in cash.

HIT-AND-RUN
Someone struck the side mirror of a post office vehicle parked in the lot of the Glencoe Post office, 336 Hazel Ave., between 6:30 and 6:45 a.m. on Sept. 30. There was no report of estimated damage.

BICYCLE THEFTS

  • Someone stole a black Raleigh Redux 1 bicycle valued at $800 that had been left at a rack near the train station, 724 Old Green Bay Road, between 6:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 3. The front wheel was removed from the locked bike and left behind.
  • A gray Trek bicycle valued at $800 was stolen while it left unlocked at a bike rack near the train station, 725 Old Green Bay Road, between 8:30 a.m. and 6:45 p.m. on Oct. 3.

WINNETKA

INCIDENTS

THEFT
Someone stole $1,300 worth of snowboarding equipment from an unlocked storage unit in the 900 block of Green Bay Road. The theft took place in May or June and was reported on Sept. 25.

IDENTITY THEFT
An Asbury Avenue resident reported that someone had used their identity to open up credit accounts with The Roomplace, Floor & Decor and Lowe's.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE
Staff at the Winnetka Golf Course, 1300 Oak St., reported that someone caused $65 in damage to the course by plunging a club into the ground and creating divots at some point between 5 p.m. Sept. 30 and 7 a.m. Oct. 1.

ARRESTS

A 45-year-old Chicago man was arrested around 10 p.m. on Sept. 25 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol following a traffic stop in the 600 block of Hibbard Road. He was also issued citations for improper lane usage and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

A 29-year-old Round Lake Beach man was arrested around 12:30 a.m. on Oct. 1 following a traffic stop in the 1000 block of Tower Road and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and driving under the influence of alcohol with a breath alcohol concentration of 0.08 or greater. He was also ticketed for speeding.


NORTHFIELD

INCIDENTS

FRAUD
A Thackeray Lane resident reported on the afternoon of Sept. 28 that someone had recently used one of their online accounts to make $4,400 worth of unauthorized transactions.

ELUDING POLICE
Shortly after 7 a.m. on Sept. 29, police tried to pull over a car for making an improper turn and failing to signal near the intersection of Willow Road and Alice Place. Instead of pulling over, the driver took evasive action and sped away from the officer. Police did not pursue the car due to the driver's dangerous maneuvers and it headed southbound on Hibbard Road. It was later found to have struck an damaged a car in Winnetka, leading to an additional hit-and-run crash investigation.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE
Someone shattered a window and dented a car parked in the driveway of a home in the 200 block of Dickens Street between 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 30 and 9:15 a.m. on Oct. 1.

ARRESTS

A 46-year-old Aurora man was arrested around 7:30 a.m. on Sept. 25 and charged with driving without a valid license following a traffic stop near the intersection of Willow and Sunset Ridge roads. He was also issued citations for speeding and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

KENILWORTH

INCIDENTS

BIKE THEFT
Around 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 4, a thief with a black backpack exited a northbound Metra train at the Kenilworth train station, 400 Richmond Road, and walked to the bike rack, where he used some kind of cutting tool to defeat a Kyptonite lock and steal a Rad Power RadExpand 5 electric bike valued at $1,600. The thief got onto the e-bike and was last seen riding west over the train tracks toward Green Bay Road.


WILMETTE

INCIDENTS

IDENTITY THEFT
A Lake Avenue resident reported on Sept. 17 that their bank had sent them notifications about someone trying to gain access to their accounts.

ANIMAL THEFT
On Sept. 19, a resident in the 1800 block of Elmwood Avenue reported that someone had stolen their animal trap, which contained a live possum.

DISODERLY CONDUCT
A staff member of the Wilmette Public Library, 1242 Wilmette Ave., reported that someone sat near them around 2:30 p.m. on Sept. 21 and "made gestures indicating he was masturbating."

JEWELRY THEFT
Someone stole several pieces of jewelry of unspecified value from a home in the 200 block of Central Park Avenue on or before Sept. 23.

THEFT FROM VEHICLE
Someone stole the front license plate from a car parked in the 2200 block of Kenilworth Avenue on or before Sept. 23

BATTERY
A resident who grabbed a clipboard from a solicitor outside the Jewel-Osco, 1517 Sheridan Road, called police to report that they were battered by the solicitor, who had grabbed the arm of the person who had taken their property, spinning them into a wall. The person who took the clipboard was not injured, and police did not specify whether any charges were filed.

FRAUD
A Washington Avenue resident reported on Sept. 26 that someone had gained access to their credit card account and used up airline miles.

CAR BURGLARY
Someone got into an unlocked, detached garage in the 1200 block of Gregory Avenue and entered a gray Hyundai parked inside, but nothing was reported stolen.

BANK FRAUD
An Indian Hill Road resident reported on Sept. 27 that someone had gained access to their bank account and made two unauthorized wire transfers — for $8,800 and then for $12,650.

BURGLARIES

  • Someone stole an electrical panel and some copper pipe from a vacant apartment under construction in the 300 block of Ridge Road on or before Sept. 18.
  • A resident in the 1100 block of Ridge Road discovered various items hidden in their bushes on Sept. 9, including a bicycle and two bags of athletic equipment, and reported it to police on Sept. 18. An officer was able to identify the property as belonging to a resident in the 1600 block of Walnut Avenue, where the items had been stolen from a garage about four weeks earlier but not reported to police.
  • Someone broke into Walker Bros, 153 Green Bay Road, around 2:45 a.m. on Sept. 24 by smashing a window. Two empty cash drawers were taken for an unspecified loss.

BIKE THEFTS

  • Someone stole an unlocked bicycle from the 800 block of Linden Avenue on Sept. 27.
  • Someone stole a locked electric bicycle valued at $3,200 from the train station at 722 Green Bay Road on Sept. 28.
  • Someone stole a locked electric bicycle worth $8,000 from the 1200 block of Ashland Avenue on Sept. 29.

IDENTITY THEFTS

  • A 4th Street resident reported on Sept. 23 that someone had used their credit card points to buy $7,000 worth of gift cards and make them to an address in Massachusetts. The resident also reported getting a lot of spam email in their inbox.
  • A Thornwood Avenue resident reported on Sept. 26 that someone had used their identity to open a utility account.
  • A Lake Avenue resident reported on Sept. 27 that someone had used their identity to open up a cellular account and charge about $125 to it.

ARRESTS

Barney S. McGinley, 36, and Augustine Doherty, 37, both of the 300 block of South Waukegan Road in Deerfield, were arrested on Sept. 21 and charged with home repair fraud — using a false name of a home improvement company. They approached a resident in the 1200 block of Lake Avenue on Sept. 1, claiming to own a business called Pro Master Masonry and Roofing, but no such business has been registered and police said they provided quotes much higher than the industry standard and started work before the resident authorized them.

Alexander R. Hurlbutt, 37, of the 6200 block of North Sheridan Road, Chicago, turned himself in on Sept. 29 at the Wilmette Police Department on an active, detainable arrest warrant for failure to appear in court on an earlier burglary arrest.
