NEW TRIER TOWNSHIP, IL — The following information comes from the Glencoe, Kenilworth, Northfield, Wilmette and Winnetka police departments and court records as a record of police activity and incidents reported to the police. Criminal charges merely represent accusations by the state, and county prosecutors often choose to drop or reduce them. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Anyone arrested is innocent unless later proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.


WILMETTE

INCIDENTS

THEFT
A resident of the 600 block of Pine Street reported on April 30 that someone had stolen a red metal-framed baseball pitching back from their front yard.

HOME BURGLARY ATTEMPT
Around 10:45 p.m. on May 6, a resident in the 100 block of 6th Street reported that someone had removed a screen from a window of their home but not gained entry.

STOLEN CAR
On April 29, Chicago police in the 100 block of South Lockwood Avenue found a Honda minivan that had been stolen from a Wilmette auto body shop in the 1900 block of Lake Avenue on Nov. 26, 2022.

HARASSMENT
A resident in the 2000 block of Chestnut Avenue reported on May 3 that a family member had been sending them unwanted or threatening text messages.

FRAUD
A Hibbard Road resident reported on May 5 that they discovered that their 16-year-old daughter had made $370 in payments using the Zelle app to someone named Stephen. The teen believed the payments were for an internet class on cryptocurrency, but she never received anything.

HOME BURGLARY
Someone broke into a home in the 400 block of Wilshire Drive East on or before May 8 and ransacked several rooms inside. Nothing was listed as stolen at the time of the report.

IDENTITY THEFT
A Hibbard Road resident reported on May 9 that he had gotten notifications from two banks about a loan application and credit check that he did not may. Later, he learned that someone had used his identity to attempt to purchase a Land Rover remotely from a car dealership in Texas.

GIFT CARD SCAMS

  • A Miami Road resident reported on May 3 that they had received an email, purportedly from a friend, asking them to buy $400 worth of gift cards, but a Walgreens staffer informed the resident that it was a common scam and stopped the transaction.
  • On May 9, an Elmwood Avenue resident reported that they had been scammed into buying $1,200 worth of gift cards by emails and text messages purporting to come from a friend front their church.

CAR BURGLARIES

  • Someone opened the door of an unlocked Volkswagen SUV in the 800 block of 17th Street shortly before 1 a.m. on April 29, running away after a motion-activated light turned on.
  • Someone got into two unlocked cars parked in the 1000 block of Illinois Road on the night of April 28 or early morning hours of April 29.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

Lisa Matthews, 53, of the 3100 block of West Douglas Boulevard, Chicago, was arrested on May 1 in Chicago and charged with deceptive practices in connection with an unspecified incident in Wilmette.

Maria Luisa Newton, 59, of the 2400 block of West Thorndale Avenue, Chicago, was arrested around 11:30 p.m. on May 3 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after officers spotted her behind the wheel of a Toyota SUV on the shoulder of the northbound lanes of the Edens Expressway. She declined to provide a breath sample, and officers also ticketed her for improper lane usage.

Peter H. Nelson, 36, of the 1100 block of Central Avenue, Wilmette, was arrested on May 4 and charged with disorderly conduct, possession of drug paraphernalia and violation of an active order of protection after police were told he pretended to fire a gun at a passing motorist at the intersection of Wilmette Avenue and Green Bay Road the prior day. While being taken into custody, he was found to have drug paraphernalia and admitted residing at an address prohibited by an order of protection.

Samuel C. Oh, 31, of the 700 block of Lavergne Avenue, Wilmette, was arrested around 10 a.m. on May 11 and charged with aggravated assault of a person over the age of 60 after police were called to his block of residence for a report of a man chasing another man around with a knife. Officers found Oh holding a knife near a family member, who explained that Oh was chasing him because Oh believed the family member had taken his medications.

Andre L. Youkhana, 26, of the 4900 block of Carol Street, Skokie was arrested around 9 p.m. on May 11 and charged with possession of between 30 and 100 grams of cannabis after police pulled him over for a minor traffic violation, spotted a marijuana grinder in his car and conducted a search that turned up nearly 50 grams of cannabis.

Kenilworth police have not reported any incidents or arrests during the month of May.

INCIDENTS

CREDIT CARD FRAUD
A Green Bay Road resident reported on May 2 that someone had used their credit card to make two fraudulent purchased at Neiman Marcus within minutes of each other, one for nearly $18,500 and the other for more than $12,000.

CHECK FRAUD
A Euclid Avenue resident reported on May 3 that a check written to an insurance company for less than $250 had been re-written for a fraudulent charge of more than $2,200.

WIRE FRAUD
A victim in the 900 block of Oak Drive reported on May 8 that they had intended to send a $250,000 wire transfer to a paving company, but they got fraudulent wire instructions and the company never received the payment.

ATTEMPTED GRANDPARENT SCAM
A scammer called a Hawthorn Avenue resident claiming to be a grandson and saying he needed money to get out of jail on May 11. The resident found the call suspicious and did not provide any money to the scammer.

THEFTS

  • An unidentified man or boy stole a tip jar from Hometown Coffee, 700 Vernon Ave., at some point point on April 30 for a loss of $40 to $50.
  • A couple of pieces of jewelry from the collection of a late family member were reported missing from a home in the 1200 block of Hohlfelder Road on May 2.
  • A Park Avenue resident reported on May 15 that they had gotten an empty package in the mail after ordering an iPhone 14 Max from the Apple website for a loss of nearly $1,300.

IDENTITY THEFTS

  • A Vernon Avenue resident reported on May 10 that they had gotten a letter purporting to come from the U.S. Secret Service regarding the seizure of a bank account that was not theirs.
  • On May 12, a Longwood Avenue resident reported that they got a call from Fifth Third Bank in Michigan notifying them that a person was in the bank's lobby trying to access their account information. The person was stopped form completing a $4,000 wire transfer.

ARRESTS

Harrison Wallace, 34, of the 3700 block of 72nd Street, Moline, was arrested following an April 26 traffic stop in the 600 block of improper lane usage. He was charged with driving under the influence and issued a citation for improper lane usage.

Cordell Brown, 36, of the 700 block of North Linden Avenue, Waukegan, was arrested on April 30 near the intersection of Dundee Road and the Edens Expressway and charged with aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under the influence of alcohol and driving under the influence of alcohol with a breath alcohol concentration of 0.08 or greater and issued citations for operating an uninsured motor vehicle and improper lane usage.

Denise Turner, 29, of the 500 block of 8th Street, Waukegan, was arrested on May 2 and charged with leaving the scene of a crash and driving with a suspended license following an incident near the intersection of Harbor Street and Green Bay Road. Officers also issued her a citation for disobeying a traffic signal, failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash and illegal transportation of an open container of alcohol.

Jorge Alarcon, 33, of the 2200 block of Leyden Avenue, River Grove, was arrested on May 7 and charged with aggravated driving under the influence, aggravated fleeing or eluding police, driving with a suspended license and reckless driving following a traffic stop near the intersection of Northwood Drive and Green Bay Road. He was also cited for speeding, improper lane usage, driving with expired registration and disregarding a stop sign.

Jeremy Peters, 36, of the 8100 block of Keating Avenue, Skokie, was arrested on May 10 in the 900 block of Eastwood Road and charged with criminal trespassing to vehicle and criminal trespassing to property.

Laurentiu Vaduva, 30, of the 4000 block of 182nd Place Southwest in Lynwood, Washington, was arrested on May 12 and charged with counterfeiting following an investigation into an unspecified incident.

Skippy Miller, 28, of the 5100 block of North Albany Avenue, Chicago, was arrested on May 16 in the 300 block of Hazel Avenue on an active arrest warrant issued in connection with an October 2022 Glencoe home burglary.

INCIDENTS

CHECK FRAUD

  • Someone intercepted and altered checks mailed by a Provident Avenue resident for an unspecified loss somewhere in excess of $5,000 between April 14 and April 28, police were told on May 1.
  • Someone intercepted and altered a check mailed by an Ash Street resident between April 30 and May 9 for an unspecified loss in excess of $5,000.
  • Between April 2 and April 7, someone altered a check that had been mailed by a Ridge Avenue resident for a loss of $4,000, police were told on May 10.
  • A Cherry Street resident reported on May 12 that someone had intercepted and altered checks that had been mailed between Jan. 21 and May 12 before cashing them for a nearly $4,100 loss.

VANDALISM

  • Someone spray-painted a cement wall in the 800 block of Green Bay Trail prior to 10 a.m. on May 2 for a loss of $500.
  • Multiple walls in the 500 block of Green Bay Trail were spray-painted prior to the morning of May 2 for a $1,000 loss.
  • Someone spray-painted a sign in the 1000 block of Gage Street at some point prior to the afternoon of May 5.

IDENTITY THEFTS

  • Someone used the identity of a Linden Street resident to make unauthorized transactions using their American Airlines Advantage miles on Feb. 23 for an unspecified loss in excess of $5,000, police were told on May 3.
  • Someone used the identity of a Locust Street resident to apply for a credit card with Firestone Complete Auto Care on May 1, police were told on May 7.
  • At some point between October 2020 and January 2021, someone used the identity of a Garland Avenue resident to apply for a disaster loan from the U.S. Small Business Administration, police were told on May 8.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

Jargalmaa Enkhbold, 24, of the 2800 block of Pontiac Drive, Aurora, was arrested around 3:15 a.m. on May 14 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and driving under the influence with a breath alcohol concentration of 0.08 or greater following an encounter with police near the intersection of Chestnut and Oak streets. Officers also issued Enkhbold citations for driving without lights when needed, improper lane usage, illegal stopping or standing and illegal transportation of an open container of alcohol by a driver.


NORTHFIELD

INCIDENTS

THEFT FROM VEHICLE
Someone stole a catalytic converted from the car of a Chicago resident while it was parked at the Mariano's, 1822 Willow Road, between 3:15 and 6:45 p.m. on May 5, for a loss of about $500.

CREDIT CARD FRAUD
A Northfield Square resident reported on May 8 that someone had made several unauthorized credit card transactions in recent months totaling more than $11,000.

IDENTITY THEFT
A Valley Way resident reported on May 9 that someone had recently used their identity to open online accounts and accrue more than $7,000 in unauthorized charges.

SUSPICIOUS PERSON
Around 5 p.m. on May 9, a resident in the first block of Regent Wood Road reported a suspicious man had come over to her at her home around 90 minutes earlier, purported to be a lawn sprinkler service person, said he needed to change a battery in her backyard, and took a ladder into the area. Officers followed up with the sprinkler company and learned it did not have any staff in the area at the time.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE
Someone damaged a car parked in a lot in the 1700 block of Orchard Lane prior to 9 p.m. on May 13, police were told.

HOME BURGLARIES

  • Police were called to the 300 block of Regent Wood Road around 1 p.m. on May 5 for a report that someone had burglarized the home sometime during the prior week.
  • Around 10:30 a.m. on May 8, officers were dispatched to a home in the 300 block of Regent Wood Road for a report of a residential burglary that had occurred sometime during the past couple of months.

CHECK FRAUD

  • An employee of a business in the 1700 block of Harding Road reported on May 2 that someone had intercepted and altered a check in the mail for an unspecified loss.
  • An Arbor Lane resident reported on May 2 that someone had intercepted and altered a check in the mail for an unspecified loss.
  • A Fox Meadow Court resident reported on May 4 that someone had intercepted and altered a check for an unspecified loss.
  • An East Frontage Road resident reported on May 4 that someone had intercepted and altered a check for an unspecified loss.
  • A Thackeray Lane resident reported on May 10 that someone had intercepted and altered a check in the mail for an unspecified loss.
  • A Red Barn Lane resident reported on May 12 that someone had intercepted and altered altered a check in the mail for an unspecified loss.

ARRESTS

Mary E. Reckamp, 59, of the 2100 block of 2nd Street, Northbrook, was arrested shortly after midnight on the morning of May 11 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol following an encounter with police in the 2300 block of Winnetka Road.
