Fake Rolex investigation leads to Lyons man's arrest; thieves target bike shops; $7,250 in egging damage: New Trier Township Police Blotters

NEW TRIER TOWNSHIP, IL — The following information comes from the Glencoe, Kenilworth, Northfield, Wilmette and Winnetka police departments and court records as a record of police activity and incidents reported to the police. Criminal charges merely represent accusations by the state, and county prosecutors often choose to drop or reduce them. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Anyone arrested is innocent unless later proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
WILMETTE
INCIDENTS
THEFT
Someone stole a flag from the front yard of a home in the 600 block of Central Avenue on April 25.
CAR BURGLARY
On April 19, a resident in the 800 block of Westwood Lane reported that someone had entered his work van and stolen approximately $17,000 worth of plumbing equipment.

SHOPLIFTING
- Staff at the CVS, 1515 Sheridan Road, called police on April 27 to report a retail theft in progress and confronted a shoplifter who had filled a bag with over-the-counter medications and admitted that he was about to leave the store without paying for them. He was told he was banned from the store.
- Someone stole a dark blue Janus men's hybrid bicycle from Wilmette Bicycle and Sport Shop, 605 Green Bay Road, on April 20. Police were told that a man or boy had taken the bike for a test ride but never returned with it.
ARRESTS/CITATIONS
Kyle P. Morris, 26, of the 8100 block of 45th Place, Lyons, was arrested on April 18 and charged with theft by deception and possession of between 500 and 2,000 grams of cannabis following an investigation into an Oct. 6 incident in which the owner of a store in the 100 block of Skokie Boulevard had purchased a Rolex watch from a customer before learning it was not authentic.

Dejala Branch, 23, of the 9400 block of South Wentworth Avenue, Chicago, was arrested around 7:45 a.m. on April 24 in the 1500 block of Birchwood Avenue after an officer contacted her. Branch had an active arrest warrant issued on behalf of Willowbrook police in connection with an allegation of fleeing and eluding.

INCIDENTS
IDENTITY THEFTS
- An Abingdon Avenue resident reported on April 20 that they discovered someone had fraudulently used their identity to take out a loan from the Small Business Administration.
- An Essex Road resident reported on April 25 that the Small Business Administration had notified them of a past due amount on a business loan taken out fraudulently using their identity.
- A Tudor Place resident reported on April 25 that they had been notified of a past due amount on a $6,200 credit loan that someone had taken out using their identity.
ARRESTS
Brian Thomas, 51, of the 200 block of Churchill Street, Northfield, was arrested shortly after midnight on April 23 and charged with battery and criminal trespassing after police were called to the 600 block of Kenilworth Avenue for a report of an unwanted person in a home. Police said Thomas forcibly shoved an officer prior to his arrest.

INCIDENTS
CHECK FRAUD
A Lake Street resident reported on April 20 that they sent a $8,520 check to the U.S. Treasury to make a tax payment and received a fraud alert from Chase Bank indicating that someone had intercepted and modified the check.
IDENTITY THEFT
A Vernon Avenue resident reported on April 25 that someone had used their identity to open a DirectTV account.
WINNETKA
INCIDENTS
SHOPLIFTING
Someone stole a $1,080 bicycle from Green Bay Cycles, 999 Green Bay Road, around 2:45 p.m. on April 18. Police reported the bicycle was later found in Des Plaines.
CRIMINAL DAMAGE
Someone threw bottles at a home in the first block of Warwick Road around 9:30 p.m. on April 29, causing damage to doors for a loss of $2,000.
EGGING
- Someone threw eggs at a home in the 600 block of Locust Street around 8 p.m. on April 22, damaging a window and chairs and accounting for an estimated loss of $2,250.
- Between 4 and 9 p.m. on April 28, more eggs were thrown at a house in the 600 block of Locust Street, causing about $5,000 in damage to the exterior of the home.
CRIMINAL DEFACEMENT
- At some point between Jan. 15 and April 26, someone spray-painted a concrete wall under a bridge near Green Bay Road and Eldorado Street, causing about $300 in damage.
- On April 28, a Winnetka Park District staffer reported that someone had defaced picnic tables at Indian Hill Park, 131 Wilson Street, causing $250 in damage.
IDENTITY THEFTS
- A Maple Street resident reported on April 17 that someone had used their identity on April 11 to fraudulently apply for a loan.
- A Winnetka Mews resident reported on April 24 that someone had used their identity to make an some number of withdrawals from their BMO Harris account between April 11 and April 13 for an unspecified loss in excess of $5,000.
- On April 26, someone used the identity of a Myrtle Street resident to make unauthorized purchases using their Walmart account, police were told on April 28.
CHECK FRAUD
- On April 21, a Westmoor Road resident reported that someone had altered a previously mailed check and caused it fraudulently between March 11 and March 20 for a loss of nearly $4,450.
- A Pine Street reported on April 25 that someone had intercepted and altered a check between March 19 and April 22, causing an unspecified loss in excess of $5,000.
ARRESTS/CITATIONS
Gerardo Rios, 22, of the 3400 block of North Monticello Avenue, Chicago, was arrested around 3:45 a.m. on April 20 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and driving under the influence of alcohol with a breath alcohol concentration of 0.08 or greater following a traffic stop near the intersection of Green Bay and Sunset roads. Officers also issued him citations for improper lane usage and improper turning.
Omar Cruz, 42, of the 2100 block of West 21st Street, Chicago, was arrested around 4 p.m. on April 20 in the first block of Indian Hill Road after officers dispatched to a solicitor complaint discovered he had an active arrest warrant from an unspecified jurisdiction.
NORTHFIELD
INCIDENTS
Someone burglarized a car left unlocked while parked in the lot of a self-storage business in the 800 block of West Frontage between 1 and 8:15 p.m. on April 18, stealing a phone charger and various keys from inside.
AMAZON TEXT MESSAGE SCAM
A Valley Way resident reported on April 21 that they had encountered a scammer after getting a text message purporting to be from a representative of Amazon Web Services. The messaged asked the resident to call a "customer service" number for some alleged issue, and a person on the phone later instructed the resident to send about $500 to a specific email address using Zelle.
IDENTITY THEFT
A Thackeray Lane resident reported on April 23 that someone had recently made an unauthorized $6,800 charge on their credit account.
SUSPICIOUS PACKAGE
Police were called to a home in the 100 block of Riverside Drive on April 24 for a report that they had received an unexpected package in the post. Several hours after receiving the package, two women or girls arrived at the residence and asked to retrieve it.
HOME BURGLARY
Someone broke into a home in the 2200 block of Bracken Lane between 6 and 9 p.m. on April 29. Police did not release information about the mode of entry or how much was stolen.
PORN SCAM
A Latrobe Avenue resident reported on April 30 that someone who they had met online was demanding a $300 blackmail payment to prevent the release of alleged "compromising photos" of the resident.
CHECK FRAUD
- A Fox Meadow Court resident reported on April 20 that someone had intercepted a check mailed a few weeks earlier, altered it and cashed it for an estimated loss greater than $3,000.
- A Dickens Road resident reported on April 21 that someone had altered one of their checks in the mail and cashed it for an estimated loss of more than $25,000.
- A Landmark Road resident reported on April 26 that a check had been intercepted in the mail and cashed without authorization.
