Investigators believe there were three male occupants and one female occupant headed from Chicago to Prospect Heights when they exited Interstate 94 in Wilmette and drove onto a commercial driveway.
Girard said at least one person got out of the car and fired several rounds, but a search of the area turned up no evidence that anyone had been hurt or any property was damaged. Charges remain under review, he said, and there is no ongoing threat to public safety.
