Wilmette Offers 24/7 Compst Drop Off For Residents
Wilmette residents now have access to five 24/7 compost drop-off locations as part of a new pilot program.
WILMETTE, IL — Composting just became easier in Wilmette with the newly launched compost drop-off pilot program.
Beginning this month, residents will have access to five locations that will be open 24/7 throughout the village to dispose of approved waste. Loose food scraps are preferred, but acceptable waste includes:
- Meat, fish, bones
- Coffee filters and grounds
- Eggshells, nut shells, nuts, & pits
- Dairy & non-dairy alternatives
- Baked goods & grains
- Pizza boxes
- Napkins, paper towels and 100% paper products
- BPI-certified compostable products
Non-accepted items include:

- Plastic and Styrofoam
- Produce stickers
- Glass, metal, and foil
- Excessive oils/liquids (fats, grease, etc)
- Pet waste, diapers, baby wipes
The drop-off program's pilot period will end Dec. 31 this year.
"Throughout this time, staff will assess usage, locations, and proper disposal to determine if this program will be a permanent offering in the Village," officials said in a statement.

Residents will find drop-off locations at:
- Wilmette Public Works - 711 Laramie Ave.
- Thornwood Park - 2361 Kenilworth Ave.
- Centennial Recreation Complex - 2300 Old Glenview Rd.
- Metra Poplar Parking Lot - Poplar Dr. and Oakwood Ave.
- CTA Linden Parking Lot - 349 Linden Ave.
