WINNETKA, IL — New Trier High School has clinched the top spot in the fall standings in nationwide rankings that incorporates the performances of nearly a dozen of its sports teams.

New Trier becomes the first Illinois school to claim the top spot in the MaxPreps Cup, a ranking system to compare high school athletics programs across the country.

The Trevians edged out last fall's winner, Wayzata High School in Plymouth, Minnesota, after their teams were winners of three state championships and runner-ups in another.

Created by the sports news website MaxPreps, a division of CBS Sports, the cup is calculated using the site's own expert rankings of the top 25 football and volleyball programs and its computer rankings for boys soccer, girls soccer and girls field hockey.

It also incorporates rankings by DyeStat for both cross country teams, Swimcloud rankings for swimming squads and boys and girls golf rankings from HighSchoolGolf.org.

MaxPreps Cup standings are determined using a formula that recognizes state championships, runner-up finishes in state tournaments and placement in national rankings.

It also weights the results based on the size of states, the popularity of sports, their enrollment divisions and the number of teams against which they compete.

In addition to winning state championships in boys golf, boys soccer and girls tennis and finishing runner-up in girls swimming, four New Trier squads were nationally ranked — No. 3 in boys soccer, No. 4 in girls swimming, No. 24 in boys golf and No. 25 in girls field hockey.

Last year, Hinsdale Central finished the fall sports season and overall school year season as the MaxPrep Cup's top-ranked team in Illinois.

New Trier came in second in the state for the 2022-23 season, followed by Benet Academy in Lisle, Nazareth Academy in LaGrange Park and O'Fallon Township High School.

This year, New Trier holds a commanding lead in the state rankings heading into the spring — with more than twice as many points as Hinsdale.
