Kendall Master Gardeners Annual Plant Sale Set For May

The 2022 sale will feature 15 varieties of tomatoes and nine of peppers as well as native plants and nursery-stock perennials.

OSWEGO, IL — Kendall County Master Gardener will once again host its annual plant sale, offering shoppers 15 varieties of tomatoes and nine of peppers as well as native plants and nursery-stock perennials at the May 21 event.

Local Master Gardener volunteers started more than 700 vegetable seedlings for the event, according to a news release. From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the University of Illinois Extension office, 7775B Route 47 in Yorkville, shoppers will be able to pick out their stock to plant for the upcoming growing season.

In Oswego, the last day for frost is expected to be April 25. The day represents the average date of the final "light freeze," which occurs when the temperature dips between 29 and 32 degrees Fahrenheit, Patch reported. At that temperature, tender plants can be killed.

By the end of May, when the plant sale is set to occur, the chance of frost will have most likely passed, making it safe to plant fruits, veggies and plants for the summer.

For those who may not be expert gardeners but want to learn, volunteers will be at the plant sale to answer any gardening questions.

At the same time, plant sale visitors can stop by the 4-H Teen Science Ambassador Rain Garden Open House to learn about native plant species and how rain gardens help fight water pollution.
