“The Sheriff’s Office correctional staff have taken numerous steps over the past several months to plan and prepare for this possibility, Sheriff Dwight Baird said, in the news release. "Unfortunately, we had to implement those plans on November 25th, however, because of the hard work and dedication of the corrections staff we were prepared and able to quickly and effectively put those plans into action and prevent further spread of COVID-19 throughout the facility. I would like to thank the corrections staff for their ability to adapt to this very difficult situation while maintaining the highest levels of professionalism and service. The commitment and dedication they have shown to the Sheriff's Office and the citizens of Kendall County cannot be overstated.”

The sheriff's office announced on Nov. 25 that eight inmates at the jail tested positive for the coronavirus. The eight were all housed in the same unit of the jail. The sheriff's office said they were all experiencing flu-like symptoms and were subsequently tested for COVID-19. The remaining two inmates in that housing unit that tested negative had been quarantined and are being monitored for symptoms.

On Nov. 28, 13 more inmates and four staff members tested positive.

One inmate had been taken to an area hospital for precautionary measures, the Kendall County Sheriff's Office said in a release.
