YORKVILLE, IL — Yorkville plan commissioners green-lit plans for Costco Wholesale to move forward with building a new warehouse in the city, despite concerns from residents.

Following a public hearing on Jan. 8, members of the Yorkville Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously voted to approve the proposal for Costco, including a special use variance for a gas station, at the northwest corner of Veterans Parkway and Countryside Parkway.

Plans for the site include a 160,000-square-foot members-only retail store and a freestanding gas station, stormwater management and two perimeter lots, city documents detail. The proposed site plan calls for 956 parking spots, including 18 accessible spaces.

The development would span about 33.14 acres, with an additional 7 acres for the perimeter lots and another 3.4 acres for stormwater management.

While some residents shared their support of the project, others who spoke at the meeting cited concerns about increased congestion.

"My biggest concern is traffic along McHugh, which runs on the west side of our subdivision," said a resident of the Prairie Meadows subdivision. "I see Kennedy Road and McHugh Road becoming significantly busier."

One resident said he'd like to see more accessible parking since "we have a lot of seniors around this community, and it would be welcomed."

"At the two [nearby Costco locations in Plainfield and Naperville], it is extremely hard to find handicapped parking the way it exists," he said. "Maybe that could be a consideration."

Another resident shared her excitement about Costco's opening in Yorkville.

"I personally think Costco is the perfect place for the 33-acre parcel," one lifelong Kendall County resident said at the hearing. "In my opinion, I shop at Costco all the time. If you were to go to Naperville, now that is congestion. ... I feel we need this big opportunity with Costco, and I've got a lot of people on the same page, so I want to say thank you, and I can't until the store opens."

Mayor John Purcell announced in November that the company was eyeing Yorkville as the site of another warehouse.

Approval from City Council will be the next step in the process, and the vote is currently scheduled for Jan. 28, according to Shaw Local.
