Fire Causes $3.5 Million In Damage At Crystal Lake Condo: Chief

According to the department, investigators believe an unattended candle on a balcony might be related to the cause of the fire.

CRYSTAL LAKE, IL — An early Wednesday morning fire at a Crystal Lake condo building caused an estimated $3.5 million in damage, according to a release from Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department. In a release, the department said crews responded to a report of a structure fire in the 500 block of Devonshire Lane at 3:02 a.m., adding that investigators believe an unattended candle on a balcony might be related to the cause.

The first Crystal Lake Fire Rescue unit reported finding a two-story, multi-family, apartment-style building with flames coming from the roof before quickly spreading through the entire length of the building through the attic, according to the release.

Police and fire crews began to evacuate the building's residents while other crews set up several truck to get water onto the roof and attic put out the fire, according to the release. The fire department said no residents were injured, however, the building is uninhabitable due to fire and water damage impacting 19 of the building's unit. Building management and the American Red Cross are working with 21 displaced residents to provide shelter, the release said.

The department said the fire was declared under control just over two hours later around 5:20 p.m.
