All we have right now is HOPE! HOPE for our first survivor! I lost my mother and 5 other family members to Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. In June, in memory of my mother, I traveled to Washington DC, to attend the Alzheimer’s Impact Movement (AIM) Advocacy Forum. With over 1,000 of my fellow advocates, we turned Capitol Hill purple. Along with the other Indiana advocates, we met with Indiana Members of Congress to express the importance of continued research funding. We shared our stories of how Alzheimer’s has affected our families. Our voices make a difference in assuring that the prioritization of Alzheimer’s policies continues. We cannot make progress without support from Congress. Alzheimer’s or another dementia can affect anyone. Thankfully, Congress knows this fight isn’t red or blue – it is purple. Our bipartisan leaders have played an important role in accelerating the way our nation addresses this disease. That is why I am asking my Representative Andre Carson to support a $113.485 million increase in research funding at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for FY 2026. Since I first began advocating with the Alzheimer's Association, research funding has increased significantly! The funding increases have led to remarkable progress in developing new biomarkers and treatments that are meant to slow the progression of this devastating disease, but we can't stop there. Continued and sustained federal investment in research funding has the opportunity to provide millions of Americans like me with a sense of HOPE.
