Ames Man Accused of Making Threats With an Axe Handle

Ryan Callahan allegedly broke out a window at Tip Top Lounge after a fight.

A 36-year-old Ames man allegedly stormed through the Tip Top Lounge wielding an axe handle, broke out a window and struck other objects after getting into a fight with another patron, according to criminal complaints.

Ryan Callahan of Hyland Avenue was charged with going armed with intent and third-degree criminal mischief.

Ames police were called to the lounge 12:50 a.m. Monday. They were told a man was breaking out the windows. Police were told that Callahan had first argued with another patron and that they had a physical fight. Then Callahan said "I got something for you" and ran outside, according to complaints.

He had bragged about owning a firearm while referring to the recent theater shootings in Aurora, Colo, complaints said.

Then he came back with a taped axe handle, which he used to break out the window in the business' rear door, and started striking things inside, complaints said.

People told police that the man left in a green Bronco. Callahan came back to the Tip Top Monday afternoon, which is when police arrested him. Callahan matched the physical description of the axe wielding man, including the fact that his last name was tattooed on his back, complaints said.

Going armed with intent is a Class D felony, punishable by up to five years in prison and a $7,500 fine.

Juan Franco-Olivio, 36, Story City, was charged with violation of a protective order.

James Hastings, 58, Madrid, was charged with fourth-degree theft.

July 25

 Zachary Webster, 27, Clark Avenue, was charged with public intoxication.
