Ames Police Officer Drowned Going After Boat
Howard Snider, 51, attempted to swim out to a drifting fishing boat when he drowned, authorities say.

An  sergeant who was known among his peers for being "firm and fair" drowned Father's Day Weekend in Henry County while trying to bring his boat back to shore.
Sgt. Howard Snider, 51, of the Ames Police Safe Neighborhoods Team, drowned Sunday in Lake Geode. He had a wife and two children.
Henry County Sheriff's Office said that Snider was returning to shore and left a fishing boat with others when it drifted and his daughter, still on the boat, couldn't bring it back on her own. He jumped in to help and went under, according to a report in the Ames Tribune.

Snider's visitation is from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday at Adams Funeral Home on Douglas Avenue. Snider's funeral service will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday at Cornerstone Church.
