How Much Do You Know About Ames?

Every town has its traditions. Check out these fun facts about what makes Ames so special.

Ames is a place like no other. And whether you grew up here, recently moved to the area or you’re just an occasional visitor, you know that Ames has its own special traditions and history that make it so unique.

A few things to know:

  • The first electronic digital computer, the Atanasoff-Berry Computer (ABC), was invented in Ames in the late 1930s. The computer was created by John Atanasoff and his graduate student, Clifford Berry, at Iowa State University. The ABC was an important milestone in the development of modern computers and a replica can still be seen on display at the university.
  • Reiman Gardens, located on the Iowa State University campus, is home to over 17 acres of gardens and outdoor art. Visitors can enjoy seasonal displays, butterfly exhibits and a 2,500-square-foot indoor conservatory. The gardens also host a variety of events throughout the year, including concerts, workshops and festivals.
  • Ames is home to the first-ever public library in the state of Iowa, which was established in 1870. Today, the Ames Public Library offers a variety of programs and resources for all ages, including book clubs, writing workshops and online databases.
  • In the 1960s, the Ames Laboratory at Iowa State University played a key role in the development of the atomic bomb. Today, the laboratory is dedicated to research in materials science, energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.
  • The Octagon Center for the Arts, located in downtown Ames, is a community arts center that offers classes, exhibitions and special events throughout the year. The center also hosts an annual Octagon Art Festival, which brings together over 100 artists from across the Midwest.
  • Ames is home to a variety of parks and recreational areas, including the Ada Hayden Heritage Park and the Ames Dog Park. The city also has a network of over 80 trails, making it easy to explore the outdoors on foot or by bike.
  • Ames is known for its vibrant local food scene, with a variety of restaurants, cafes and breweries offering everything from traditional Midwestern fare to international cuisine. Visitors can take a food tour of the city, sampling local favorites like pizza at The Mucky Duck Pub or craft beer at Alluvial Brewing Company.
  • Ames is home to the Ames Main Street Farmers' Market, which takes place every Saturday morning from May to October in the historic Main Street Cultural District. The market offers fresh produce, artisanal goods and live music and has been recognized as one of the best farmers' markets in the Midwest.
  • The Brunnier Art Museum, located on the Iowa State University campus, features a collection of over 30,000 permanent collection art objects, including ceramics, glass, textiles and furniture. The museum also hosts rotating exhibitions and educational programs for all ages.
  • The Ames Historical Society offers a variety of walking tours that explore the city's history and architecture, including a tour of the historic Campustown district and a tour of the city's historic homes. Visitors can also take a self-guided tour of the city's public art, using the Ames Public Art Guide.
  • The Ames Community School District is known for its excellent schools, with several schools ranking among the top in the state. The district offers a variety of educational programs, including gifted and talented programs, language immersion programs and special education services.
  • The Furman Aquatic Center, located in Ames, is a state-of-the-art indoor pool complex that offers swimming lessons, aquatic fitness classes and recreational swim. The center also hosts swim meets and other aquatic events throughout the year.
  • Ames is home to a variety of cultural events and festivals, including the Music Walk, which showcases local businesses and musicians, and the Ames Area Studio Tour, which offers a behind-the-scenes look at the studios of local artists. Other annual events include the Ames Community Arts Council's ArtWalk, the Ames Pride Fest and the Ames Oktoberfest.
