📰 News we're reading

1. Iowa Public Radio to leave ISU building after over 100-year history (amestrib.com) — Iowa Public Radio will move its master control off the Iowa State campus by 2028 but says it remains committed to staying in the Ames area. The shift makes room for ISU’s Department of Public Safety while ending more than a century of on-campus broadcasting history. Leaders are now searching for a new Ames-area location for IPR operations.

2. Iowa farmland with livestock has higher value in annual ISU survey (kgloam.com) — From Ames State University’s latest farmland survey shows statewide land values up slightly, with livestock-heavy regions seeing the biggest gains. While the average acre now tops $11,500, ISU economists say inflation-adjusted values are essentially flat and note that tight land supply and stronger cattle returns are helping offset low commodity prices and high interest rates.

3. Superstitions and spirits at Iowa State (iowastatedaily.com) — Iowa State students in Ames keep alive spooky legends about haunted campus buildings and a cursed Zodiac in the Memorial Union floor that’s said to doom your next exam if you step on it. From mysterious music in Beyer Hall to unexplained loading-dock doors, these stories add a fun, eerie twist to familiar spots many locals know well.

4. Receptors in mammary glands make livestock and humans inviting hosts for avian flu (myvetcandy.com) — Researchers at Iowa State and the USDA’s National Animal Disease Center in Ames have found that mammary glands in several livestock species, and even humans, carry receptors that make them vulnerable to avian flu infection. Their work helps explain how H5N1 spreads through milk, raises concerns about raw milk from multiple animals, and underscores why surveillance and pasteurization matter for protecting Iowa communities.

5. Just bobbin' along (thegazette.com) — Two grandkids from Ames inspire their grandfather to rediscover the simple joy of bobber fishing during chilly late-fall outings. As he fine-tunes spots and timing for their visit, he realizes the quiet suspense of a jiggling bobber is just as satisfying now as it was in his youth, even after winter ice cuts their plans short.
