Ames Workshop Explains Fair Employment Practices

Representatives from local businesses can attend a free workshop
about fair employment practices 8 to 10 a.m. Thursday, June 14 in City Hall.

Topics covered include required documentation, appropriate interview questions, and where to find qualified staff.

The City of Ames Human Relations Commission (AHRC) and the Cyclone Chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) are co-sponsoring the two-hour session, which is designed to help small employers comprehend their rights and obligations when hiring employees.

Panelists for the workshop include Kristan Lawless, human resources director at Mary Greeley Medical Center; Deb Malsom, regional business development manager for Manpower, Inc.; and Doug Marek, city attorney for the City of Ames.

Attendees are encouraged to ask questions and interact with the panelists.
Employees will learn how the Iowa Civil Rights Act of 1965 defines unfair employment practices, and protects personal characteristics: age, race, creed, color, sex, national origin, religion, or disability. Employers will
learn how this impacts hiring practices, and will also hear about successful employee recruitment strategies.

Registration is not required, but seating is limited.
