After 22 Years, Beat the Street Gets a New Look

In 2012, for the first time in 22 years, Story County Medical Center’s Beat the Street race will be conducted as a function of the Story County Medical Center Endowment Foundation. The Story Medical Foundation strives to champion health in our community. Assuming hosting responsibilities for Beat the Street allows the foundation to meet that goal, while at the same time providing charitable deductibility for the sponsors of the event.

In conjunction with the new era of planning, the logo was redesigned to give the historic race a new feel. Committee members wanted the logo to embrace the streetscape of Nevada, and local graphic designer, Jen Jeffrey, designed the new logo to do just that.

The skyline is a mix of old and new, tradition and innovation in Nevada. There is a mix of history – vintage homes and historic barns – and modernism - wind turbines and a state-of-the-art medical facility – in the same community.

The clocktower of Story County Medical Center’s new South Campus is distinctive, and one of the newest features on Nevada’s horizon. Most will recognize the water tower and wind turbine that have been part of Nevada for many years.

On the left side of the logo, you’ll find a silhouette of the historic Bowman Barn. Though the barn is round, and hard to portray in a 2D logo, the image also resembles the steel grain storage bins that Iowans see every day. In general, the barn image represents the agricultural industry that is so prevalent in Nevada.

On the far right is a Victorian house silhouette that was adapted from the House at Briggs Terrace/Evergreen Lane. The Briggs Terrace House doubles as a symbol of the heritage and history of Nevada. Nevada is proud to have preserved this house, as well as several other historic homes.

The runner icon is explanatory as well as pictorial. Seeing the Beat the Street logo, a runner can expect a race that is an appealing and interesting because of the unique qualities of the city, but also well-managed and organized because the Race Director, Nancy Willert, is a lifetime runner herself!

Registration for the 22nd annual Beat the Street 5K Run/2 Mile Walk will open on February 27th. Story County Medical Center will host the race on Saturday, May 5, 2012. Information is available at www.storymedical.org or by calling the race director at 515-382-7115.
