Mosquito Fogging to Begin June 25

Mosquito fogging in City parks will begin on Monday, June 25, if conditions permit, and continue through Labor Day weekend.  Larvaciding efforts have already started.  Ames residents who are planning large events may call the Parks and Recreation Department and request that a specific park be fogged before their event. 

The following parks will be fogged between 8 p.m. – 10 p.m., weather permitting  (no rain or winds over 10 miles per hour): 

Mondays:        Country Gables Park, Ames Dog Park, and Hunziker Youth Sports Complex 
Tuesdays:         Homewood Golf Course, Inis Grove Park, Brookside Park, and         River Valley Park 
Wednesdays:        Bandshell Park, Moore Memorial Park, Emma McCarthy Lee Park, and Daley Park 

In the event of inclement weather, the makeup dates for all the parks will be Fridays from 6 to 8 a.m. and 8 to 10 p.m. 

Mosquitoes thrive in the warm, wet weather of summer in Iowa and can carry several diseases. However, there are several ways to avoid and get rid of mosquitoes. The most effective way to eliminate mosquitoes is to remove standing water in residential areas.  It’s also important to remember to wear mosquito repellent or long-sleeved shirts and long pants to prevent bites.

What Can You Do? 
The Iowa Department of Public Health recommends the following tips for reducing mosquito breeding and avoiding mosquito bites. 
·        Empty containers that hold water, such as flowerpots. 
·        Cover tires that are stored outside to prevent pooling water. 
·        Repair leaky outdoor faucets. 
·        Keep gutters clean and in good repair. 
·        Stock ponds with fish that eat mosquito larvae. 
·        Fill in potholes and puddles. 
·        Change water in birdbaths, pet bowls, and wading pools every three to four days. 

How to Avoid Mosquito Bites: 
·        Wear long sleeved shirts and long pants. 
·        Avoid outdoor activities during the early evening hours when mosquitoes are most active. Use mosquito repellents containing DEET. Repellents should be applied to clothing or onto the hands, and then rubbed onto exposed skin. 
·        Repair any tears in window and door screens.
