Mosquitoes thrive in the warm, wet weather of summer in Iowa and can carry several diseases. However, there are several ways to avoid and get rid of mosquitoes. The most effective way to eliminate mosquitoes is to remove standing water in residential areas.  It’s also important to remember to wear mosquito repellent or long-sleeved shirts and long pants to prevent bites.Â
To contact the Parks and Recreation Department, call the City of Ames at (515) 239-5350.Â
What Can You Do?Â
The Iowa Department of Public Health recommends the following tips for reducing mosquito breeding and avoiding mosquito bites.Â
·     Empty containers that hold water, such as flowerpots.Â
·     Cover tires that are stored outside to prevent pooling water.Â
·     Repair leaky outdoor faucets.Â
·     Keep gutters clean and in good repair.Â
·     Stock ponds with fish that eat mosquito larvae.Â
·     Fill in potholes and puddles.Â
·     Change water in birdbaths, pet bowls, and wading pools every three to four days.Â
How to Avoid Mosquito Bites:Â
·     Wear long sleeved shirts and long pants.Â
·     Avoid outdoor activities during the early evening hours when mosquitoes are most active. Use mosquito repellents containing DEET. Repellents should be applied to clothing or onto the hands, and then rubbed onto exposed skin.Â
·     Repair any tears in window and door screens.Â
