Parks and Recreation Commission Seeks Input on Bequest

From City of Ames

AMES, Iowa – The Ames Parks and Recreation Commission is seeking public input regarding the bequest of the late Dr. Geitel Winakor. The former Iowa State University professor passed away in 2011 leaving $1.7 million to the Department of Parks and Recreation. The Commission will include public input on the bequest as part of its regularly scheduled meeting at 4 p.m. Thursday at City Council Chambers, City Hall, 515 Clark Ave.

Winakor was a longtime resident of Ames and an accomplished professor in the Department of Textiles and Clothing. She retired as Professor Emerita in 1992, and passed away on Aug. 15, 2011. Since 2001, Winakor had been a frequent benefactor to the Parks and Recreation Department and had contributed approximately $160,000 before her death.

Parks and Recreation Director Nancy Carroll said through conversations with Winakor over the years, it is believed two criteria should be used in determining how best to utilize this gift. First, the project should enhance the quality of life for both current and future generations. Second, the project should ensure an impressive, long-lasting investment in the community.

To help the Parks and Recreation Commission assess all proposed project ideas, Carroll said a decision-making matrix had been devised with criteria including:

·        Is the idea in an existing or previously adopted City plan?
·        What is the estimated one-time capital cost?
·        Is additional funding required?
·        What is the annual operating and maintenance cost estimate?
·        Do we have a willing partner?
·        Can we obtain the land?
·        Is there diversity of anticipated users?

Those who want to share comments about the bequest with the Commissioners but are unable to attend the Parks and Recreation Commission meeting, may forward ideas to Carroll at (515) 239-5357 or email her ncarroll@city.ames.ia.us
