Honoring 9/11/01

Ames Choral Society will perform “Honoring 9/11/01” beginning at 3 p.m., Sunday at the Ames City Auditorium.

The Ames Choral Society, the Good Company, and a bagpiper will perform on the Ames City Auditorium stage in a musical program.

Both choral groups will perform pieces from their spring concerts that are spiritual and have lines that discuss loss, although they don't specifically address the 9/11 events, said Choral Director Steve Hoifeldt.

“I hope they would have words that provide comfort to those remembering what went on then,” he said.

The choral society will perform Franz Shubert's “Mass in G” in a 25-minute piece featuring three soloists.

Hoifeldt said they are not performing the mass as a church service.

“There are words in it that make people think. The last words are Lord Have Mercy Grant Us Peace,” Hoifeldt said.

Singalongs to patriotic songs, “America,” “America the Beautiful” and the “Star Spangled Banner” will be performed throughout the hour-long program.

The event is free and open to the public.

Ames Public Library, Ames Patriotic Council and 11 Days of Global Unity are sponsoring the event.
