Story County Conservation’s Integrated Roadside Vegetation Management (IRVM) department invites prairie enthusiasts to assist in gathering prairie seed at Story County’s natural areas.Â
Public seed harvests are scheduled for Tuesday, September 27, and Thursday, October 6, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Doolittle Prairie. Participants will meet at the prairie entrance (14249 560th Ave) south of Story City. Travel on I-35 to exit 123 (130th Street), go west ½ mile to 560th Avenue, then south 1-1/4 miles. The seed harvests are weather dependent; registration is requested but not required.
Story County Conservation has so much prairie to plant and not enough seed to go around! No experience is necessary; we'll show you where, how, and what species of seeds to collect. Sturdy shoes, socks, long pants, insect repellent, hat, and gloves are recommended. Please bring a re-fillable water bottle as we will be out in the prairie.
