Relationships: Spheres of Influence Exhibition and Programs

Relationships: Spheres of Influence will be held at the Brunnier Art Museum, Iowa State University, from January 10 to May 6, 2012.

This exhibition and related programs explore the  dynamic connections in the Integrated Studio Arts faculty and their colleagues across campus.  The final in a cycle of exhibitions, this exhibition will feature the work of studio arts faculty Chris Martin, Brent Holland, Ingrid Lilligren and Teresa Paschke.  Educational programs presented by each artist and their on-campus cohort will provide stimulating insights into the relationships among art and disciplines in the sciences and humanities.

The Brunnier Art Museum is located on the second floor of the Scheman Building.  Admission is free, but a $3 donation is suggested.  The Brunnier Art Museum’s regular hours are as follows: are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Friday and 1 to 4 p.m., Saturday and Sunday from 1:00pm to 4:00pm.  The Brunnier Art Museum is closed on Mondays and University holidays.

Wendy Wintersteen, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Dean, along with the faculty in Integrated Studio Arts invite you to join them in celebrating the exhibition Relationships: Spheres of Influence at the Brunnier Art Museum.  Enjoy light refreshments, conversation, and a brief program at 5:15 with remarks from Dean Wintersteen, College of Design Dean Luis Rico-Gutierrez, and faculty exhibition coordinator Ingrid Lilligren.

Inquiry: Perception, History and Making 
Brent Holland, associate professor in Art and Design will be joined by Eric Cooper, associate professor in Psychology, as they visually explore the past and the present, the imagined and the observed through art and the science of visual cognition.

Tuesday, February 28 at 7:00 pm in the Brunnier Art Museum
We Aren’t So Different After All
Chris Martin, associate professor of Integrated Studio Arts, will share reflections on his two years living in Ghana as a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer and the new perspective he has gained of his own American culture as expressed through his new body of work. Robert Mazur professor of Sociology will consider the “us and them” mentality when it comes to aid and assistance to the developing world and how this has affected development on the African continent.


Tuesday, March 27 at 7:00 pm in the Brunnier Art Museum
High/Low: Graffiti, Embroidery, Technology
Teresa Paschke, associate professor of Integrated Studio Arts, creates art that explores the notion of tags, monograms, and other “markings” through textiles.  She will be joined by Amy Bix, associate professor of History, who will talk about the history and technological development of textile printing and Nancy Girard, educator for University Museums, who will talk about how graffiti writers used tags to create their own personal identity and define their community. 

Tuesday, April 3 at 7:00 pm in the Brunnier Art Museum
Fearless Symmetry
Deb Marquart, professor in English, Paul Canfield, professor in Physics and Astronomy, and Ingrid Lilligren, professor in Art and Design, discuss ideas about chance, magnetism, pattern, and repetition in poetry, physics and art.  The conversation will be spontaneous, playful, and participatory.

Sunday, April 15 at 2:00 pm in the Brunnier Art Museum
Movement, Music, & Art
Valerie Williams, director of Co'Motion Dance Company and Ingrid Lilligren, professor in Art and Design, present an afternoon of human and computer interactions.  Using the music of Antonin Dvorak and art work created by Lilligren, participants will be able to interact with forms and sound by simply walking.
