Former ISU Football Player Could Face 10 Years in Prison for Alleged Bar Fight

A 25-year-old Ames man was charged with willful injury after a reported bar fight early Thursday, according to Ames Police.
Wallace Franklin, a former Iowa State University football player, was arrested on charges early Thursday after police found him hiding in a storage room in the basement of .
Ames police were called to Paddy's Irish Pub for a fight in progress about 12:10 a.m., said Ames Police Cmdr. Jim Robinson. When they arrived they found John Kirchner with deep lacerations to the left side of his neck, his left shoulder and his right thumb, according to criminal complaints. Kirchner was bleeding heavily and people told police that a shirtless black male wearing red pants hit him with a glass bottle, complaints stated. Another person in the bar told police that he knew Franklin and watched him hit Kirchner repeatedly with a broken bottle, complaints stated.

Police said they found Franklin in a neighboring bar, Cy's Roost. He was in a storage room in the basement, according to the complaint. He was shirtless and wearing red pants and had a bloody nose, complaints stated. Franklin told police that he had been jumped and punched in the nose, complaints stated.
Franklin is currently being held in Story County Jail on a $10,000 bond. Willful injury is a Class C felony punishable by 10 years in prison. According to a report in the Iowa State Daily, Franklin was a football player for the University until he was removed from the team in 2009.
