Patch Poll: Do You Believe in Tax Fairness?

Gov. Terry Branstad has recommended eliminating a loophole that allows online stores to avoid collecting sales tax that brick and mortar stores do.

Gov. Terry Branstad and the National Retail Federation have advocated a push to collect sales tax from internet purchases.

In some cases online stores are able to avoid collection of state and local sales taxes that brick and mortar stores collect.

Branstad recently joined a bipartisan national effort to collect sales taxes on online purchases and asked both Iowa Senators Chuck Grassley and Tom Harkin to approve a tax fairness bill, as reported in the Des Moines Register.

According to the article Iowa could be missing out on $13 to $181 million in sales tax collections each year.
