ISU Student Christian McKee in Critical Condition After Fall From Legacy Apartments Balcony

A 19-year-old Iowa State University student remained in critical condition through Tuesday, after falling from a fifth-story ledge of a high rise apartment complex.

AMES, IA - A 19-year-old Iowa State University student remained in critical condition Tuesday, after falling from a fifth-story ledge at Legacy Towers Apartments.

Christian McKee sustained a number of serious injuries from the fall about 1:30 a.m. Sunday and was transported by air ambulance to a Des Moines hospital for treatment, according to a release from the . Mercy Medical Center staff said McKee was in critical condition as of 9 p.m. Monday. On Tuesday staff expected he would also remain in critical condition overnight Tuesday.

McKee had climbed over the railing of a fifth-story balcony at  Apartments before he fell, according to police.

This is the second time this year a person has fallen from a balcony in Ames. In April, , died when he fell from a fourth-floor balcony in Campustown. Police said he was in town for ISU's Veishea celebration and that alcohol was involved.

Police have yet to say what led to McKee's fall, and they are still seeking information.

McKee is listed as a freshman engineering student in the directory. Staff from the registrar's office said Monday that a Christian McKee gave his in session address as Robins and had attended classes at the university in the fall of 2011 and the spring of 2012.

The university's fall 2012 session began Aug. 20. Legacy Towers is on Stanton Avenue, about a block from the university and Campustown, a commercial district that includes bars, restaurants, retail and office space.

McKee fell from the south side of the multi-story building and landed in the dirt on a construction site directly behind the building. WHO-TV estimates he fell about 50 feet.

Campustown Property Management, which manages the building, a mix of office and residential space, had no comment on the incident. People told police that McKee was alone on the balcony when he fell.

The building's elevators were accessible Monday, but doors to the residential floors were locked and could be opened only with a key card or access code. 

McKee would have fallen just to the east of  Station 2 on Welch Avenue.
