Police: ISU Student Climbed Over Rail Before Fall From 5th-Floor Balcony in Ames

Ames police will withhold the man's identity until Monday afternoon out of respect for the family.

The man who fell from an Ames early Sunday had climbed over a balcony's railing before he fell, according to police.

Ames Police Commander Jim Robinson said the man fell from the fifth-story ledge of the Legacy Tower Apartments early Sunday. He had climbed over the balcony's railing before the fall.

Police were called to help about 1:30 a.m. Sunday. The man was flown to Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. The status on his condition is unknown. No other information is available. Police expected to release his name Monday afternoon.

Robinson said the man was an Iowa State University student living in Ames, but did not live in the building.
