Ames City Council considers ordinance to protect gender identity (kcci.com) — Ames residents could soon see gender identity explicitly protected in city law, as the City Council voted 5–1 to advance a local civil rights ordinance after state-level protections were removed. In a joint session with the Ames Human Relations Commission, officials agreed to draft a measure adding gender identity as a protected class, with a full ordinance and public input expected in February.
   

2. Ames defines 'personal transportation devices,' adds regulations (amestrib.com) — New rules for bikes and other “personal transportation devices” are moving through Ames City Council, including defined speed limits in parks and on most streets, plus lighting requirements after dark or in low visibility. The ordinance, which has passed its first reading, would also extend existing bans on riding along Main Street, Lincoln Way, Hayward Avenue and Welch Avenue to many motorized devices, while keeping exemptions for disability-related mobility aids.

Within 90 days of taking office, thousands of Iowa leaders must now complete open meetings and records training, a requirement prompted by transparency concerns after the Davenport apartment collapse.

Iowa State study shows potential path for spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza (kcci.com) — Researchers at Iowa State University in Ames have identified how the H5N1 bird flu virus could potentially infect the milk-producing glands of several livestock species and even humans, underscoring why pasteurization is so important. While Iowa hasn’t seen dairy infections since mid-2024, the team says local farmers should stay vigilant for sick animals and keep birds away from herds to reduce risk.
