Rep. Steve King Seeks To Outlaw Same Sex Marriage on Military Bases

King introduces an amendment to prohibit gay marriage on military installations Thursday. King faces Ames Democrat Christie Vilsack for Iowa's new 4th District.

Rep. Steve King created an amendment that wouldn't allow gay marriages on any U.S. Military installation and or allow military chaplains to perform such ceremonies, Politico.com reported.

King, R-Kiron, faces Ames Democrat Christie Vilsack for Iowa's new 4th District.

King said the Defense Against Marriage Act already prohibits such marriages but his amendment would mean a full ban.

Rep. Norm Dicks, D-Wash. said King “knows that current law already prohibits same-sex spouses from independently shopping at military commissaries, using base gyms or benefiting from subsidized dental and health care,” and added that Congress should instead debate the affect that DOMA has on service members and their families, Politico reported.

The House passed the amendment Thursday, according to the Capital Column. The amendment states that no federal money can be spent to contravene DOMA.

After the amendment's passage King issued this statement:

"The military is an entity of the federal government, and federal law states that marriage is between a man and a woman," said King. "Despite this, the Obama administration has allowed same sex marriages to occur on military bases. These marriages violate the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). My amendment prohibits the use of both military funds and facilities for same-sex marriages."
