South Meadow Apartment Fire's Cause Undetermined
Ames Fire Department continues to investigate the cause of a July 15 apartment fire.

The cause of a at , which displaced more than 80 residents, remains under investigation.
The fire broke out just July 15 on the 56-unit apartment building's southeast side. It appeared to start in a carport in the building's first story.
The flames then consumed the vinyl siding and spread into the roof through the soffit. The blaze spread throughout the building's roof because the roof lacked fire stops, required by current building code, Ames Fire Chief Clint Petersen said at the time.

Residents were safely evacuated from the building but some firefighters were treated for minor injuries.
Anyone wanting to help the fire victims can donate items at the 's new center at 703 E. Lincoln Way.

Items being requested include: kitchenware, bedding, clothing and shoes.
Call the Salvation Army at (515) 233-3567 for donations of larger items such as furniture.
The office is open from 8:30 a.m. to noon and 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 1:30 to 6 p.m. Tuesday.
