Area Students Place in Ankeny's Geographic Bee

Ankeny hosted the 25th Annual Geographic Bee at DMACC over the weekend.

An Ames student was victorious in the 2013 Iowa Geographic Bee held at DMACC's Ankeny campus over the weekend.

Jonathon Grunenwald, an eighth-grader, beat Patrick Taylor of Iowa City in a tie breaker round, according to a release.

The area students were one of 100 students that competed in the Bee on Friday. All contestants won their school bee and passed a written test to qualify for state.

Taylor, the runner up, was the youngest competitor to ever place second in the Iowa competition. The 10-year-old reigns from Horn Elementary in Iowa City.

Grunewald received $100 and will compete in the National Geographic Bee in Washington on May 20-22. The winner of the national contest wins a trip to the Galapagos Islands, according to the Ames Tribune.
