City of Coralville Requests Volunteer Assistance for Sandbagging, Flood Preparations

The City of Coralville continues in its preparations for flooding from the Iowa River andย Clear Creek. ย 

Volunteers are needed to assist with filling sandbags beginning at 11:00 amย today. Volunteers willing to assist with this effort are asked to report to the Coralvilleย 

Streets Department at 750 Camp Cardinal Boulevard. ย This is located south of Highway 6ย across from McGregor's Furniture. ย Volunteers are asked to bring gloves and park on Jamesย 

Street and walk west towards the domes. ย The sandbags will be used by the City to protectย areas deemed most in danger of flooding based on elevations along the waterways. ย 

Volunteers are also welcome to report to the United Way Emergency Volunteer Center,ย which is open from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. ย The Emergency Volunteer Center is located inย 

Montgomery Hall on the second floor at the Johnson County Fairgrounds, 4265 Oak Crestย Hill Rd SE, Iowa City. Handicap accessible ramp available on the south side of the building.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has indicated that, based on recent and projected rainfall,ย the water level in the Coralville Reservoir may reach the emergency spillway early nextย week. ย The Corps plans to increase the release rate from the Reservoir today to 17,000ย cubic feet per second with additional increases in the coming days.
